Do you remember that class in Secondary school where we were taught how to use egg shells to make scouring powder? Well, this is something like that.
I think we all know that certain foods can do more than one thing in the home. If you have an excess of certain foods and need to use them before they go bad why not try cleaning with them?
Before you go and start scrubbing your floors with agbalumo, please know that not all foods are multi-taskers!
So here are five foods that you can clean with.
Grapefruit can be used to clean tubs and sinks. Simply cut in half and sprinkle one half with coarse salt. Wet the tub or sink and sprinkle salt on these surfaces. Use the salted grapefruit to scrub these areas. When you are done scrubbing rinse with water. Your surfaces will be free of soap scum, shiny, and smell citrusy.
If you need to get rid of rust, use a potato. Cut a potato in half and dip the side without a peel into baking soda or dish soap. Firmly rub the potato into the rusted area and keep rubbing until the rust is removed.
Lemons have tons of uses for housecleaning. Here are a few:
For greasy pots and pans sprinkle half a lemon with baking soda and use like a scouring pad. The citric acid will quickly cut through tough grease.
Add a teaspoon of lemon juice to the laundry with the detergent to give a fresh scent to laundry.
To clean a cutting board, squeeze half a lemon on the board and allow it to soak for 10 – 15 minutes. Stains will lighten during this time and to kill bacteria use the lemon half to scrub the board vigorously.
The tannins in tea make wood shine, so tea is a great natural furniture polish. Simply soak a rag in cooled tea, wring out the rag and wipe on wood furniture for a deep shine.
- White Vinegar
Sometimes after washing your glasses, they still have that dirty look to them. To make them look like they have actually been washed, just grab a wet dishrag, add a touch of vinegar and rub down the entire glass. This will remove fingerprints and smudges because the acid will cut through grease and eliminate minerals. Then rinse the entire glass with hot water.
